The other big change using this type of update is Minecraft Tools  texture packs being replaced with resource packs. Resource packs can contain not only custom textures and also sounds, language files, fonts and end credits without any modification to Minecraft. The goal would be to eventually make every mod and plugin a resource pack for the game including the base, vanilla version. This will allow users to easily switch between mods and different version with the game while using the new Minecraft launcher.
